The traditional publishing model is broken.

It’s been broken for years.

But because it still makes money for the big publishing houses (at the expense of artists and authors), nobody’s done anything to fix it.

Well, all that’s changing.

Insurgent Publishing started like many things do – as a way to fix something broken.

I saw the traditional model and hated the layers of bureaucracy, the publisher’s control of intellectual property at the expense of the artists and writers, and a system that owed it’s monetary success not to creativity or groundbreaking art, but to relentlessly advertising average books to the average majority.

But what about the outliers?

What about the people who care about writing and books as a craft?

What about those who seek out disruptive ideas that challenge the status quo?

What about the people who couldn’t care less about bestsellers lists – who just want quality books in their hands, regardless of their mass appeal?

Who’s publishing for them?

The answer, of course, is no one.

At least until now.

Disrupting the Status Quo

Insurgent Publishing is a boutique, full-service publisher. We bring great ideas to life.

Think “The War of Art” by Steven Pressfield, “Poke the Box” by Seth Godin, “Rework” by the folks at 37 Signals, and “Steal Like an Artist” by Austin Kleon.

Those are the books that inspired me to write in the first place – and they continue to serve as inspiration for the type of content we intend to publish here at Insurgent Publishing.

Compelling, impactful, actionable books that inspire you to be better than you are.

That’s the type of content we need more of in this world.

That’s the type of content we intend to bring to this world.

It’s not for everyone…but if it were, we wouldn’t be called Insurgent Publishing.

Wait, Who Are You?

I’m Tom Morkes and I’m an instigator; I start things.

This is me laughing at something funny.

This is me laughing at something funny.

Before starting Insurgent Publishing, I was an officer in the US Army. I served 5 years including a deployment to Iraq.  I received my commission from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY (where I double majored in Russian and Geography, and competed on the boxing team).

A few more things about me:

  • I’m an avid reader and love books.
  • I love the artisan craft of story telling.
  • And I love sharing creative ideas with others.

The reason I started Insurgent Publishing was to fulfill a very selfish desire to creatively collaborate with incredible artists and authors on compelling projects.

Plain and simple, I love bringing worthwhile art into existence.

If you’d like to read more about my ideas on this subject, you can check out my blog here.

But most importantly: thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

The only reason I’m doing this is for you – the reader who’s passionate about what he or she reads.  None of what I do matters if you don’t care…so I hope you continue to care (and I hope I can make that easy for you to do).

So, sincerely, thank you so much for being a part of this.

And if you’d like to get involved in some way, shape or form, join the Insurgency by clicking here.

Take care and keep creating,

Tom Morkes (Founder and CEO of Insurgent Publishing)

The Insurgent Publishing Promise.

We’re a boutique publishing company.

We publish books that matter for the creative outliers of the world.

Unlike most publishing houses who care about profit first and cater to the major bookstores, our philosophy is completely different: we care about art first.

This means putting the relationship between reader and artist first.

Our promise:

1. never compromise on quality

2. never water down our content for profit

3. continually push boundaries and disrupt the status quo
